Baby caps with ties and ear flaps: what to look out for

Babies cannot keep a cap on by themselves. They turn their heads, rub against the pram and pull at whatever is within reach. Ties under the chin and ear flaps help a cap stay where it belongs.

How the cap should sit

  • The cap covers the forehead to just above the eyebrows, without sliding over the eyes.
  • Ear flaps cover the ears completely.
  • The cap sits snugly but does not leave marks on the skin.

The basis for all of this is the right size. Measure around the widest part of the head, just above the ears and eyebrows, and compare with our Size Guide.

How tight to tie

Tie the strings loosely under the chin, so that you can easily slide a finger between the ties and your baby's chin. Caps with ties can be adjusted a little this way, but the ties do not make a cap that is too big fit.

An important safety rule

Never leave a baby to sleep in a cap with ties. Take the cap off when your baby sleeps, indoors and in the pram, and when nobody is watching.

Check the cap from time to time

Babies grow quickly. If the cap starts to press or the ear flaps no longer cover the ears, it is time for the next size. Check seams, ties and small details such as patches regularly, and follow the care label when washing.
